A quick getaway to nature in the heart of the city: Seongsu trip
The weather has been so gorgeous lately that it felt like a waste to just stay cooped up at home. So, I finally headed over to Seongsu-dong for the first time in a while. It's super easy to get to—just a 30-minute bus ride from Gangnam Station! 🚌

As soon as you come out of Seoul Forest Station, Exit 3, you'll spot the information board right away. The yellow and orange background makes it really stand out. I felt the excitement starting to build right from that moment.

Seoul Forest Park: Soaking up the fresh vibes of early summer
A perfect harmony of lush greenery and art

As soon as I stepped into Seoul Forest, I was greeted by a dynamic equestrian sculpture. The way the skyscrapers in the background blend with the lush green trees gives off such a unique, exotic vibe. The Mirror Pond is especially amazing—the sky reflects so perfectly on the surface, making it the ultimate photo spot!

The atmosphere was even more lively since the Seoul International Garden Show was happening right now. There was quite a long line of people trying to snap photos in front of the character air balloons. Just a heads-up though, there are Muddy Ground Warning signs on the grass, so watch your step so you don't ruin your shoes haha.
Exploring Seongsu-dong Alleys: Where Retro Meets Smart
Smart Alley Pop-up and Vintage Vibes

Walking into the Seongsu-dong alleys, the Smart Alley Pop-up Store immediately caught my eye. There was a long line stretching out under a red banner, and they were even giving out roasted sweet potatoes and running a roulette event! The concept of layering smart technology onto a retro alleyway felt really fresh.

Deep inside the alleys, I found a space filled with 80s Hong Kong movie posters. Seeing nostalgic masterpieces like Romeo and Juliet really made me feel like I had traveled back in time. The blue character statue in front of the EQL select shop also perfectly captures that hip Seongsu-dong vibe.
Seongsu-dong Workshop Street: The Breath of Artisans and the Hidden Sides of the Street
The Light and Shadow of the Handmade Shoe Street

Seongsu Handmade Shoe Street is a place where you can truly feel the hard work and sweat of the artisans. The little acrostic poem guide from Master Han Yong-heum was so charming and heartwarming. It was also impressive to see modern services, like free 3D foot scanning, coexisting with such tradition. 🗺️

To be honest, there were some disappointing parts too. Right underneath a flashy golden monument, there was a messy pile of trash. It was a bit sad to see it so poorly maintained, especially considering its reputation as a hot spot.

Still, the flower beds and hydrangeas lining the path were absolutely beautiful. The information boards were well-placed, making it so pleasant to stroll along while slowly reading about the history of handmade shoes. Being able to encounter this kind of craftsmanship right in the middle of the city is definitely what makes Seongsu-dong so charming.
Foodie Tour: Daelim Changgo, Us Blanc, Jayeondo Salt Bread, Kyuendang
The unexpected charm of Daelim Changgo Dining Bar

When you think of Seongsu-dong, you have to think of Daelim Changgo. That vintage red brick exterior is just overwhelming every time I see it. But just a heads-up, finding the entrance can be a bit tricky! You need to go through the large door located next to Bongrae Leather, right across from Ader Error Seongsu. You can also enter through the glass window area next to the gallery, so keep that in mind!

The dining bar menu is quite refined. They specialize in fusion Korean dishes like the Assorted Sashimi (40,000 KRW) or Neobiani (38,000 KRW). When they serve the food, they'll tell you to mix the stir-fried anchovies and nuts into your rice—and seriously, you have to do exactly what they say! It makes the flavor of the rice pop instantly. Total pro tip!
Ous Blanc Seongsu: Expectations vs. Reality

I also stopped by Ous Blanc, which has the cutest little polar bear character. There were so many types of bread that I almost had a total meltdown trying to choose! lol The Carrot Rapée Baguette (6,800 KRW) is their signature item, but since they didn't warm it up for me when I ordered, the crust was a bit chewy, which was a little disappointing.
Also, just a heads-up: if you visit the rooftop when the weather is chilly, it might be a bit awkward because it's completely empty. As for the wood-fired bread sandwich, the dough wasn't anything super special—it just tasted like a thick flour bread, so it was pretty average to me. The vibes are great, but the taste might be hit or miss depending on your preference.
Jayeondo Salt Bread: Is it worth the hype?

Jayeondo Salt Bread sells a whopping 7,000 pieces a day! The system here is a bit unique. The ordering kiosk is separate on the right side of the shop, and after you pay, you have to head over to the pickup line on the left. They don't sell them individually; you have to buy them in a set of 4 (12,000 KRW). ⏱️
To be honest, the taste isn't anything super special—it's just a decent middle ground between a soft dinner roll and a salt bread. It's delicious when it's fresh out of the oven, but I did wonder if it was really worth waiting in such a long line. Still, the packaging is so pretty that it would make a great gift!
Gyuendang Seongsu Main Branch: A Meal in an Exotic Atmosphere

The last place I visited, Gyuendang, has this mysterious charm from the outside that makes it look like a Mexican restaurant. The interior is Japanese-style, but the lighting design gives off a national museum vibe, making it feel quite upscale. Just a heads-up, though—it gets really crowded and noisy because there are so many people.
Here's a pro tip for grilling your Gyukatsu: add some butter to your mini personal grill first before placing the meat on it to really bring out the flavor. Also, the Omurice has such fluffy eggs that the presentation is absolutely insane lol. The wait is a bit long, but it's definitely worth a visit at least once.
